‘Egret’

A heron is an egret is a heron.

You’ll see it in marshes or the pages

of Jewett’s “White Heron,” where it enchants

Sylvy to protect it from the charming young

intruder, a shooter in Bean gumshoes . . .

From “Some Birds,” a new collection of poems by George Held of Sag Harbor.
