Zan A. Zolan

Dr. Zan A. Zolan of Scottsdale, Ariz., an internist and cardiologist formerly of East Hampton, died on Jan. 7, after a two-year illness with cancer.
Born in Istanbul on Sept. 20, 1933, Dr. Zolan was an accomplished athlete, participating in track and field and playing basketball for the Turkish national team.
His Greek heritage left him with limited opportunities in Turkey, and many of his friends were placed in concentration camps there, which led him to emigrate to the United States in the late 1950s after graduating from college.
Dr. Zolan completed his medical internship and residency at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn, where he met his future wife, Deirdre Reed, a registered nurse there. They were married on March 24, 1961, and settled in Flushing, Queens, where Dr. Zolan practiced medicine as an internist and cardiologist for 40 years, serving on the medical board of Flushing Hospital. He also served as the district doctor for Consolidated Edison for over 30 years.
Dr. Zolan greatly appreciated the opportunities in the United States, and according to his daughter, Alexandra Zolan Campbell of Weston, Conn., “was a proud American.” In addition to English and Turkish, Dr. Zolan spoke French and Greek.
He and his family had a house on Waters Edge in East Hampton from 1976 to 2005, and were members of the Devon Yacht Club in Amagansett for more than 25 years. Dr. Zolan enjoyed tennis, bridge, and backgammon, as well as spending time with his family and friends. He was a parishioner at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons in Southampton, before he retired and moved with his wife to Scottsdale.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Dr. Zolan is survived by his son, Dr. John Andre Zolan of Santa Barbara, Calif., and a sister, Ayla Ebrem of Istanbul, as well as three grandchildren.
Dr. Zolan’s ashes will be dispersed next summer at Gardiner’s Bay near the Devon Yacht Club. His family has suggested donations to the Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center, 9494 East Becker Lane, Scottsdale, Ariz. 85260-6720.
