    Richard H. O’Brien, a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor and a veteran of the Navy, died at Southampton Hospital on Friday after a short illness. He was surrounded by his family at the time.
    Mr. O’Brien was a founding member of the Sag Harbor Community Band and a life member of the American Legion Chelberg Battle Post in Sag Harbor. He spent four years in the Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea CVA-43 beginning in 1950. An electrician, he worked for the Town of Southampton for many years.
    He was born on Main Street in Sag Harbor on Dec. 8, 1931, to Kenneth and Elizabeth O’Brien. He graduated from Pierson High School. He and Joan Kelly were married on Jan. 25, 1958, and the marriage lasted until her death in 1998.
    Mr. O’Brien is survived by three children: Richard H. O’Brien Jr. of Holden, Mass., Kevin P. O’Brien of Sag Harbor, and Deirdre O’Brien of East Hampton. Also surviving are six grandchildren. A brother, Kenneth O’Brien, and a sister, Doris O’Brien, died before him.
    A service was held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral in Sag Harbor on Monday, and a Mass celebrating Mr. O’Brien’s life was offered on Tuesday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church there. He was buried next to his wife in the St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
    His son, Kevin, said that his father had everyone laughing until the end.
