The dive team of the East Hampton Town police recovered a human skull in 8 to 10 feet of water about 40 yards from shore near Big Albert’s Landing Beach in Amagansett on Friday. The divers were conducting an underwater search in connection with the May 22 discovery of a headless body that washed up on shore. Police believe the body to be that of a 20-to-30-year-old male.
According to Detective Sgt. Robert Gurney, the day was perfect for diving, with light winds and good visibility. The dive team had been in the water once before, the day the body was discovered, and found a finger.
The skull, finger, and body are now in the possession of the Suffolk County medical examiner in Hauppauge. Police will determine if the body parts came from the same person and are continuing to follow all leads so as to ascertain that person’s identity.
