For those hoping to soak up the last rays of the season, Main Beach and Two Mile Hollow Beach in East Hampton Village will be open with lifeguard protection Tuesday. Minor damage occurred at the Main Beach pavilion when the ocean swept beneath it. Although swimming is permitted at those two beaches, the public is cautioned about debris that may be underfoot.
The ocean beaches on the South Fork were badly hit at high tide by the tropical-force winds generated by Irene on Sunday, with Georgica Beach in East Hampton closed indefinitely, according to Larry Cantwell, the village administrator.
“Erosion at and near Georgica is severe,” he said in a statement. The erosion dug into the road that ends at the beach, which is partially collapsed. No vehicles will be allowed to park at Georgica or at the end of the road until debris is removed from the parking lot and the area is safe, which could take a few more days.
