HIFF Screenwriters Lab Participants and Master Class Announced

Christina Choe participated in the 2014 Screenwriters Lab, where her script for "Nancy," an award-winning feature film at this year's Sundance Film Festival, was honed. It is scheduled for release in theaters this year.

The Hamptons International Film Festival has chosen three women for its Screenwriters Lab, which will take place in East Hampton during the weekend of April 6.

The three are Esra Saydam (“The Mesopotamian”), Anu Valia (“We Strangers”), and Aemilia Scott (“Birthday Suit”).

Seeking to shape new voices and add diversity to the narratives being produced for film, David Nugent, the artistic director of the festival, said, “We are even more proud that for the first time ever we have three female screenwriters who will participate in the lab.”

Serving as mentors for the writers will be Sabrina Dhawan, the Golden Globe-nominated screenwriter of “Monsoon Wedding,” James V. Hart, who wrote films such as “Hook,” “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” “Epic,” and “Contact,” and Alec Sokolow, the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of “Toy Story” and many other films.

Although the lab sessions are closed to the public, Mr. Hart will lead an open master class  at the Ross School on April 7 at 6 p.m. In it, he will lead participants through his HartChart, a story-mapping tool for writers of scripts, plays, novels, and other literary forms. Illustrating with film clips, he will discuss what goes into writing a script for every type of audience. The cost of the class is $18, or $15 for HIFF members.
