The library will screen foreign independent films in its new state-of-the-art media room, beginning with “Precious, Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” tomorrow, 2 p.m. The film tells the story of an inner-city high school girl who is illiterate, overweight, abused, and pregnant by her mother’s boyfriend.

The library’s Thursday Night Reads series will have the added bonus of screening a film made from a classic novel published in each decade the library has been up and running. First up, the film adaptation of Edith Wharton’s “Ethan Frome” will be shown next Thursday, 6-8:30 p.m., followed by discussion of the book and film.

“The Boys are Back,” a film starring Clive Owen about a widowed English journalist raising his boys, will be shown tonight at 7.

PARRISH ART MUSEUM

25 Job’s Lane, Southampton
The museum’s winter film series will showcase films that explore diverse cultures. Tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., “The Lives of Others” will be shown. Set in East Germany in 1984, this Oscar-winning film probes the relationship between a captain in the Stasi, the East German secret police, and a successful playwright. Tickets cost $7, $5 for members.

The series will present a triple-header with Olivia De Havilland weekend, featuring “The Snake Pit” tomorrow and “The Heiress” on Saturday, and, a special St. Patrick’s Day screening of “The Quiet Man,” featuring John Wayne on Wednesday. Showtimes are at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $5. The American Hotel offers a pre-screening $25 prix fixe, which includes a movie ticket and popcorn.

QUICK TAKES

“AJAMI,” rated PG-13. Five different stories are explored in an impoverished Christian and Muslim Arab neighborhood in Tel Aviv called Ajami.

“ALICE IN WONDERLAND,” rated PG-13. Tim Burton combines live action and animation in Lewis Carroll’s fantasy adventure about Alice, now 19 years old.

“THE BLIND SIDE,” rated PG-13. A white couple takes in a homeless black teenager. All of their lives are transformed and he realizes a talent for football. Starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, and Quinton Aaron.

“BROOKLYN’S FINEST,” rated R. Three Brooklyn cops (Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, and Don Cheadle) — strangers to each other — work the mean streets of the borough, enforce laws, and then break them.

“CRAZY HEART,” rated R. Jeff Bridges plays a hard-living, down-and-out country singer who befriends Jean, a journalist who discovers the man behind the music.

“LA DANSE,” not rated. A documentary that follows the production of seven ballets by the Paris Opera Ballet.

“THE GHOST WRITER” rated PG-13. Roman Polanski’s political thriller starring Ewan McGregor as the Ghost, a writer hired to put together the memoirs of an ousted British prime minister  played by Pierce Brosnan.

“THE HURT LOCKER” rated R. This war thriller, which has already earned numerous awards, may earn Kathryn Bigelow the honor of being the first woman named best director by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The story, written by an embedded freelancer, follows a United States Army explosives ordnance disposal team in Iraq.

“DEAR JOHN,” rated PG-13. A soldier and idealistic college student play out a romance through a correspondence that lasts seven years, rarely seeing each other. 

“THE LAST STATION,” rated R. Leo Tolstoy’s wife believes she should have the rights to his work after his death, but the novelist is considering giving them to the people of Russia.

“NORTH FACE,” not rated. A pair of cocky German mountaineers set out to climb the Eiger Mountain face in hopes of being recognized during the 1936 Olympics.

“PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF,” rated PG. A teenager’s 21st-century existence takes a surprising turn when he learns his father is Poseidon, Greek god of the sea.

“SHUTTER ISLAND,” rated R. Mark Ruffalo and Leonardo DiCaprio are U.S. Marshals who are trapped on an island while investigating the disappearance of a criminally insane inmate.

“UP IN THE AIR,” rated R. George Clooney is a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching 10 million frequent flier miles.

“VALENTINE’S DAY,” rated PG-13. Garry Marshall’s latest follows a 10 people on a Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles. The all-star cast includes Julia Roberts, Queen Latifah, Ashtun Kutcher, Emma Roberts, Patrick Dempsey, Anne Hathaway, and Jamie Foxx, to name just a few.

“THE WOLFMAN,” rated R. Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hawkins, and Emily Blunt star in this retelling of the classic werewolf story.
