East Hampton wins no matter the outcome in the race for Suffolk legislator. Chris Nuzzi, who grew up here, is seeking to unseat Jay Schneiderman, the long-term incumbent, who lives in Montauk and is a former East Hampton Town supervisor.
Mr. Nuzzi has run on an appealing platform of fiscal responsibility. He is a Southampton Town councilman. Mr. Schneiderman points to his initiatives, including taking on tick-borne diseases, buses, roads, and water quality, as reason to return him to office. He has a good working relationship with County Executive Steve Bellone and caucuses with the Democratic majority in the Legislature. If Mr. Schneiderman wins, the coming term would be his last, due to term limits.
Our endorsement is for Mr. Schneiderman. He has evolved into an effective force for the Second District by developing allies in the Legislature and knowing well how to use them to the South Fork’s advantage. We would be glad to see Mr. Nuzzi take a run again in two years when the seat is open.
