Sophia Brun McMaster and Hunter Gerard Cuniff met in an anthropology class at the University of Richmond in 2006. They were friends for two years, and even had a “faux” date with each other, but did not begin dating seriously until after Richmond’s Ring Dance in 2009, where they danced and made dinner plans for the next week. Their first date was on Feb. 12 that year, and they went on to survive a long-distance relationship — Annapolis, Md., to New York — always knowing it was worth staying together, they said.
They were married at the Montauk Yacht Club on May 10.
The bride grew up on Sherrill Road in East Hampton and graduated from East Hampton High School in 2005. Her mother, Mary Jane Hantz Greenfield, and stepfather, Lyle Greenfield, live in Amagansett and Manhattan. Her father, Richard McMaster, lives in Sag Harbor.
The bridegroom grew up in Annapolis and graduated from the Key School there in 2005. His parents are Alicemarie Novello Cuniff and Clifford Cuniff of Annapolis.
At the ceremony, the bride wore an Ulla-Maija dress made of French feuille lace and charmeuse, and carried a bouquet of pale pink garden roses and peonies. She was attended by Olivia and Anna McMaster, her sisters and maids of honor, and Kate Larsen Blount as a bridesmaid. Her half-sister, Isabella Dadey-McMaster, was the flower girl.
The attendants wore silk chiffon dresses in soft peach and carried Juliet garden roses and peonies in soft peach and pale pink.
The bridegroom was attended by Justin Cuniff, his brother, as best man, and Tyler Jordan and Michael Mattes as groomsmen. Jacob Johnson, Matthew Yacob, and Julian Kurland were ushers. The ringbearer was Jackson Cuniff, the bridegroom’s nephew.
The ceremony was officiated by Michael Friedman, a close friend of the couple’s who is a Ph.D. candidate at Georgetown University in theological and religious studies. Another friend, Jamal Shipman, and Mr. Greenfield gave readings.
The bride, who has a bachelor’s degree in business administration, works in human resources for RB, a global consumer goods company based in Parsippany, N.J. Mr. Cuniff, who graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s in Latin American and Iberian studies, is a Spanish teacher at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J.
The couple are living at the Kennedy House at the Lawrenceville School, which houses 40 15 and 16-year-old boys. For their wedding trip they will tour South Africa, visiting Cape Town, wine country, and Kruger National Park.
