The Springs Fire Department answered the call at 2:59 p.m. on Monday after a neighbor dialed 911 to report a fire at 180 Woodbine Drive.

The blaze broke out at the rear of the house, apparently in the kitchen. “Thank goodness no one was in the house at the time,” said its owner, Marjorie Conlon. “You hear about the tornadoes in the Midwest and you never think that kind of thing will happen to you.”

According to Springs Fire Chief John Claflin, the fire was brought under control about an hour after firefighters arrived. Backup was provided by a tanker and fire engine from the East Hampton Fire Department; the Amagansett Fire Department sent a rapid intervention team to the scene. An investigation is under way, but the chief said he did not consider the cause of the fire to be suspicious.

The owner was unable to provide further information yesterday. She was meeting with an insurance adjuster.
