Giving blood can help save a life. Durell Godfrey

With the holiday rush comes an increased need for blood, and several blood drives have been scheduled over the coming weeks.

The first is at the American Legion Hall in Amagansett, on the corner of Montauk Highway and Abraham’s Path, on Monday from noon to 7:15 p.m. It is sponsored by the New York Blood Center.

On Dec. 13, the Bridgehampton Fire Department will host one at its firehouse from 2 to 8 p.m.

Then, just before Christmas, on Dec. 20, Pierson High School in Sag Harbor will host a drive in its gym. Donors can give blood between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Southampton High School has one scheduled for Dec. 22 from 7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with written consent from a parent or legal guardian), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Donors over the age of 76 can give provided they present a letter from a doctor.
