Fund-Raiser for Scheffer Family After Mom's Death

Deborah Lee Scheffer died on Feb. 9. A fund-raiser has been established to help her husband with expenses for their two children.

The death of Montauk’s Deborah Lee Scheffer on Feb. 9 has inspired an outpouring of generosity.

Ms. Scheffer, who died on Feb. 9 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital from complications of childbirth, was survived by her husband, Dan Scheffer, and the couple’s two sons, Coen, age 4, and Benjamin, their newborn.

A GoFundMe page was created the next day by the Scheffer family and friends with the intention of raising money to help support Mr. Scheffer and his children through the difficult times to come.

In a matter of four days, the "Support for the Scheffer Boys" GoFundMe page raised more than $37,800 of its $100,000 goal. A link on Facebook was shared at least 1,700 times to locations on the East End and beyond.

In addition to having suddenly become a single father of two, Mr. Scheffer owns and operates Schorr Caretaker Services, a property management company in Montauk. The business was founded in 1979 by Mr. Scheffer’s grandfather Robert Schorr, a retired Marine and Hempstead police officer. Mr. Scheffer joined his grandfather at the company in 2013.
