This weekend will be the first time that it will be illegal to drink alcoholic beverages during the day at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo said the newly adopted law that prohibits drinking during the day on weekends and holidays goes into effect on Saturday. The East Hampton Town Board approved the legislation on July 24

Beachgoers cannot drink in an area that extends 1,000 feet in both directions from the road ending, during the hours when lifeguards on duty on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays.

Marine Patrol officers will be deployed to enforce the ban, Chief Sarlo said.

Violators can be punished up to $250 or 15 days in jail, according to East Hampton Town Cleck Carole Brennan.
