Following the Long Island Power Authority's approval of a 90-megawatt offshore wind farm in January, plans are moving forward rapidly for the site about 30 miles east of Montauk. A team of representatives from Deepwater Wind, a Rhode Island company, will speak about the project next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Clinton Academy in East Hampton Village.
Construction of the wind farm would be in federal waters, with a project on-line date of December 2022. Deepwater Wind's five-turbine project off Block Island was the first of its kind in the United States and began operation late last year.
Some commercial fishing interests are opposed to offshore wind installations because of potential disruptions of fish habitat and altered migration patterns.
Clinton Academy is at 151 Main Street near the East Hampton Library.
