Overnight Closures Coming to the L.I.E.

Beginning Thursday evening, full overnight closures will begin on the Long Island Expressway, Interstate 495, at the Old Nicolls Road bridge (Exit 58) in the Town of Islip. The closures, for bridge maintenance, are expected to last several weeks.

According to a release from the New York State Department of Transportation, the maintenance is part of a $5.2 million project to paint overpass bridges and perform minor steel repairs at eight Suffolk County locations.

The bridge maintenance will first affect eastbound lanes, which will be shut down from Sunday nights to Friday nights, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Once work on those lanes is complete, work on the westbound lanes will start, with the same schedule.

Traffic will be diverted to the service road, but vehicles will be permitted to re-enter the expressway at the next available ramp. The D.O.T.’s press release also reminded motorists to drive carefully through the work zone, obey speed restrictions, and follow the safety instructions of workers with flags.

Portable message signs have been placed in the area to display information regarding the work, but for real-time travel information, motorists can call 511, visit 511NY.org, or visit the mobile site at m.511ny.org
