Southampton Town police have asked the public to assist them in an investigation of a "hide-a-key" thief possibly responsible for a series of burglaries.
According to a release from Detective Sgt. Lisa A. Costa, a man drove up to a Water Mill house on Friday and lifted the doormat at the front door, searching for a key. The statement does not indicate whether the man entered the house.
"Detectives are investigating several East End burglaries that may be related to this incident," the release said. "Anyone with information is asked to call the Southampton Town detectives at 702-2230, or email at crimetips@southamptontownnygov. All call wills be kept confidential."
Detective Costa also included a reminder to all East End residents to follow certain basic measures to prevent burglaries. She warned never to hide a key in obvious places, such as "planters, under the mat, in mailboxes," to always leave the garage and other potential entrances to a house locked, to leave lights on inside the house when you are away, and to never let mail or packages accumulate outside.
She also suggested that, even when a resident is away for some time, it is always wise to maintain the grounds, such as arranging to have the snow shoveled.
