The United States Golf Association has opened an office in Southampton in preparation for the 2018 U.S. Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

The 118th U.S. Open will take place from June 11 to June 17, 2018, starting with practice rounds the first three days. It is expected to draw more than 215,000 spectators, according to Charlie Howe, the championship's director. Mr. Howe opened the office at 5 Main Street in Southampton Village earlier this year to provide a local presence for the coordination of activities and logistics. A ribbon-cutting attended by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other officials was held on Friday.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the oldest incorporated golf club in the United States, has hosted the U.S. Open four times before, the first in 1896, in 1986 and again in 1995 for the 100th anniversary of the Open, and in 2004. The tournament will return to Shinnecock Hills in 2026.

"We have over 5,000 volunteer positions available for the week of the championship and many people have already stopped in to say hi and register with us in person," Mr. Howe said on Tuesday. People can register at 2018volunteers.usga.org

Tickets go on sale to the general public on June 12, 2017. Tickets can be purchased online.
