Suzanne Steele

Suzanne Steele, whose roots in East Hampton Town go back 10 generations, died in San Francisco on Oct. 18 following a heart attack. She was 85.
Ms. Steele was born in Southampton on Dec. 30, 1925, to Harry Martin Steele and the former Dorothy Fithian. Her father, a ninth-generation Miller, was a member of the East Hampton Town Police Department from 1923 to 1957 and was its first chief. Her mother was a 10th-generation member of the East Hampton Fithian family.
Ms. Steele grew up on Buell Lane here. She worked at a hardware store in East Hampton and was also a real estate agent for a time, said her niece Joan Steele of California. She moved away from the area when she retired, living in North Carolina, Florida, and eventually California, but “her heart remained in East Hampton — Bonac, as she called it,” her niece wrote.
Her brother, Harry Steele Jr., died last year. She is survived by a nephew, three nieces, and many great-nephews and great-nieces.

What an amazing woman. Always so energetic...ready with a smile and words of encouragement. I remember as a child, living on Church Street, watching Sue power walk by, but always taking the time to stop to say hello. And that megawatt smile..infectious! She was one of Bonac's greatest ambassadors. May she rest in peace.
