Robert V. Stears, a 25-year resident of East Hampton, died on April 18 at Southampton Hospital at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Anne, their three children, Robert Stears, Peter Stears, and Catherin Mashburn, and one grandchild, all of whom live in East Hampton. He also leaves a brother, Ralph Stears of East Moriches.
Born in Brooklyn to Robert V. Stears and the former Ella Mae Covert, he grew up and attended high school in Amityville before joining the Navy. Upon his return from service in 1946, Mr. Stears graduated from high school and married Anne Maniscalco that fall. Robert Stears said his parents “had an amazing marriage.” They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November.
The family lived in Massapequa, where, said Robert Stears, his father was “an entrepreneur,” and took frequent day trips to Sag Harbor and Montauk. The couple later moved to Sag Harbor and then to East Hampton. The Stearses enjoyed cooking and entertaining for their friends on the East End, said their son, as well as traveling around the country to visit others. Their travels took them to Italy for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Stears was cremated on Friday. His ashes will be buried at Long Island National Veterans Cemetery in Farmingdale. Memorial donations can be made to the East Hampton Ocean Rescue Squad, 7 Meadow Way, East Hampton 11937.
