Ruth E. McDonald, an Amagansett native and descendent of the Fithian family of East Hampton, died on May 25 in Boynton Beach, Fla., following a brief illness. She was 84.
One of 10 children, Mrs. McDonald was born in Amagansett on July 8, 1928, to Herbert K. Anderson and Sybil Rae Fithian.
After graduating from high school in East Hampton, she married Joseph H. McDonald. The two made their home in East Hampton, raising their four children there.
About a decade ago, after having spent winters in Boyton Beach, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald relocated there year-round. Mrs. McDonald volunteered with Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, working to prepare care packages to send to troops overseas. She was also an active member of her church and an avid pinochle player.
Mrs. McDonald is survived by her four children, Keith McDonald and Kent McDonald of East Hampton, Barbara Ambler of Broussard, La., and Robert McDonald of Boynton Beach. She also leaves three grandsons and two great-grandchildren. Her husband died before her.
A memorial service is planned for later this summer.
