George Schellinger Jr., a commercial fisherman, bayman, and member of the Schellinger family of early Amagansett settlers, died at home in Southampton on Jan. 25. The cause was cardiac and respiratory illness. Known as Sonny, he was 79 and had been ill for several years.
Mr. Schellinger was an active and longtime member of the Southampton Town Baymen’s Association. Born at home in Amagansett on Dec. 21, 1934, to George Schellinger and the former K. Lester, he moved to Southampton at the age of 6.
Mr. Schellinger married the former Connie Simons, who survives him, on Feb. 13, 1954. He is also survived by two sons, Thomas and Daniel Schellinger, both of Southampton, two daughters, Jane Duran of Sag Harbor and Amy Wienecke of Indian Trail, N.C., 10 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. One grandchild died before him.
A brother, Bruce Schellinger of Eastport, and three sisters, Caroline Katsamas of Micco, Fla., and Marlene McDonald and Peggy Rose of upstate New York, also survive.
A private burial took place on Jan. 27 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Amagansett. Kenneth Rothwell of the O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton officiated. Memorial contributions have been suggested to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach 11978.
