James Beres, an early pioneer in the lyrical abstraction movement whose work is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and who made Sagaponack his home, died in a house fire there early Saturday. He was 71.
Visiting hours will be at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor today between 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held in Manhattan at a date to be announced.
The family has suggested that donations in Mr. Beres’s memory be made to the Bridgehampton Fire Department Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 1280, Bridgehampton 11932.
