Dorothy N. Harrington, a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor, died of cancer on Friday at Southampton Hospital. She was 93 and had been ill for the last six months.
“She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,” her daughter, Marcia Scarlato of Sag Harbor, said.
Born in Southampton on Oct. 1, 1919, to Ignatius and Dora Rauber, Mrs. Harrington grew up in Sag Harbor, attending St. Andrew’s Catholic School and Pierson High School. A devout Catholic, Mrs. Harrington attended Mass at St. Andrew’s from early childhood throughout her life and was able to sit in the same pew over the years, her daughter said.
She and John Harrington were married on April 13, 1941. Mr. Harrington, who was a Sag Harbor police officer for 42 years and the department’s chief for 26, died in 2002. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Harrington is survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends and family gathered on Monday at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. A Mass of Christian burial took place on Tuesday at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, the Rev. Peter Deveraj officiating. Burial followed at St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
Mrs. Harrington’s family has suggested donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach 11978 or eeh.org.
