Eileen Ceceil Crichton

Eileen Ceceil Crichton, a Montauk resident known as Sunny, died on April 24 at Southampton Hospital. She was 78. Her family did not specify the cause of death.

Ms. Crichton and Alva H. Crichton, who survives, were married in 1967, and lived in Manhattan before building a house in Montauk in 1979 and moving there full time in 1989. She had been married previously to Robert Cantwell, from whom she was divorced.

Ms. Crichton’s family said she enjoyed traveling, visiting Europe on six occasions, and, on one occasion, driving through Western Europe with her mother. She and her husband had taken a trip throughout Scotland and Ireland, from where their ancestors had come.

An amateur artist, Ms. Crichton exhibited her work with the Montauk Artists Association. She enjoyed museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art and seeing theater, ballet, and opera productions. She volunteered for the East Hampton Healthcare Center and the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, taking part in its feral cat rescue program. She also attended the Sienna Spirituality Center in Water Mill.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1936, in New York City to James McCann and Mildred Kelly McCann and grew up in Flushing, Queens, where she graduated from Bryant High School. She had a career as a model for a short time before working in nightclubs and restaurants. In later life, she enjoyed being a housewife and working as a dog groomer.

In addition to her husband, Ms. Crichton is survived by a brother, James McCann of Shelter Island, two stepchildren, Dawn Redden and Stephen Crichton, six step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, and extended family members.

Ms. Crichton’s ashes were buried at Calverton National Cemetery following a memorial Mass on April 29 at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk.
