A large fire Monday morning severely damaged a house at 45 Jacob’s Way in Sagaponack. The street is a cul-de-sac off Hedges Lane.
The first alarm came in at about 6:45 a.m., according to Southampton Fire Marshal John Rankin. When Bridgehampton Fire Department volunteers arrived, it was clear there was a structural fire inside.
It took about 45 minutes to an hour to bring the blaze under control, although fire department forces stayed on the scene for the next two hours, Mr. Rankin said. The effort had a domino effect on East End departments, with Sag Harbor, Southampton, and East Hampton units on the scene and those of North Sea and Hampton Bays standing by.
Four ambulances were brought in, two from Bridgehampton, one from Southampton, and one from East Hampton Village. They stood by as a precautionary measure. No firefighters had to be taken to the hospital, Mr. Rankin said.
The Southampton fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze, which, according to Mr. Rankin, does not appear to be suspicious.
“There was quite a bit of damage to the second floor and roof. About two-thirds of the roof is gone.” The first floor, however, “is in pretty good shape,” Mr. Rankin said. He praised the combined efforts of the companies to save that floor of the house.
