Costly Late Date in Court

A Port Jefferson woman who was a no-show on Oct. 22 at East Hampton Town Justice Court after having been charged with driving while intoxicated showed up at the courthouse last Thursday. She had turned herself in to town police.

Heidi A. Kulp, 44, pleaded guilty to the charge as Justice Lisa R. Rana presided. Ms. Kulp’s attorney, Patrick Kerr, stood by her side as she was sentenced to three years of probation and a fine of $1,000, with the standard court fee of $400 added to the fine.

Ms. Kulp had the option to go to trial. But, if she had chosen that path, she would have had to spend the next couple of weeks in county jail until a place on the court calendar could be found. That was the option Justice Rana had given Mr. Kerr for his absent client on Oct. 22.

Because Ms. Kulp had allegedly refused to submit to a breath test at police headquarters when she was initially arrested on the D.W.I. charge in February, Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota’s office was not willing to offer any plea deal.
