A visitor to Main Beach, East Hampton, helped save the life today of a swimmer who had gone under and appeared to be drowning in the still-cold ocean.

According to several eye witnesses, a well-built man noticed someone apparently underwater and unresponsive at about 4:35 p.m. While others phoned 911, the man, whose name was believed to be Bill, rushed into the water, pulling the victim to shore.

Angie Masters, a visitor from Arkansas who had come to East Hampton for the day, said that she had heard screaming and seen two boys with a red bodyboard attempting to rescue the drowning person. She said that there may have been a second person in distress, who apparently made it out of the water unaided. She said that the victim appeared to be between 15 and 25 years of age. "We were just praying," she said.

At the beach, the East Hampton Village Police officers who were first on the scene and a man who said he was a doctor began to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the victim. Within a short time, an East Hampton Ambulance Association team arrived and loaded the still-apparently unconscious swimmer onto an ambulance, where he was reportedly revived and taken to Southampton Hospital, according to several people on the scene. The victim's name was not immediately available.

Lifeguards were not on duty at Main Beach at the time of the incident. According to the East Hampton Village Web site, Main Beach and the other village ocean beaches are open for swimming only on the weekends and holidays through the last Saturday in June. Lifeguards will be stationed at village beaches seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting tomorrow. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not present, according to the village.
