A brand-new black 2013 Mercedes-Benz S.U.V. is the latest luxury car stolen overnight around Wainscott this summer. Its owner, Marisa Cicco of New York City, called East Hampton Town police on the morning of Aug. 6 to report the theft.
The Mercedes had been parked in her driveway on Westwood Road the night before. It was purchased six weeks earlier for a reported $180,000.
“The car was left unsecured,” Detective Lt. Chris Anderson said Tuesday. In at least one of the recent thefts, the keys had actually been left inside the unlocked vehicle, although that may not have been the case this time, according to the detective.
He blames the false sense of security that Manhattanites feel when they come out to their summer homes. “They feel as if they are in the country,” he said. While Wainscott does have a bucolic air to it, the car thieves clearly are not hicks.
A 2012 Range Rover disappeared during the night on June 29, and a 2013 Mercedes similarly vanished on July 18.
Detective Anderson strongly urged visitors to lock their cars at night. None of the vehicles have been recovered to date, he said.
