Something good has come out of the frigid weather: Where drunken drivng is concerned, police in East Hampton area jurisdictions have had a deep-freeze couple of weeks.
In the week just past, there were no alcohol-related arrests at all. In fact, the only arrests made on the roads in the village, the town, and Sag Harbor were for unlicensed driving.
Arrests in general are down from the same time period last year. From New Year’s Day to Feb. 9, 2013, East Hampton Town police made 84 arrests; this year, there have been just 52. Credit for the dropoff is attributed to the arctic conditions, which keep miscreants close to home and out of trouble.
In Sag Harbor over the same time period, arrests declined from 13 to 10. In East Hampton Village they were down from 30 to 21.
