A number of South Fork high school athletes were cited in Sunday’s Newsday, among them Kasey Gilbride, Katherine Matthers, and India Hemby of the state-championship Pierson field hockey team.
Gilbride, whom her trainer, Andy Reilly, says is “the best athlete pound for pound I’ve ever seen,” led Long Island in scoring with 27 goals. Gilbride scored the goal that won the Sag Harbor school’s first-ever state title; Matthers scored the goals that won the Long Island and Southeast Regional championships. Hemby, who was named to Newsday’s second all-Long Island field hockey team, anchored the Whalers’ stingy defense.
East Hampton’s Marina Preiss, who’s to swim at San Diego State, was named to Newsday’s second all-Long Island team, and Raya O’Neal, the best all-round girls volleyball player East Hampton has had, was also named to the second team by Newsday in that sport. O’Neal recently signed a letter of intent to attend Hampton (Va.) University on a full athletic scholarship.
