Three Class D boys basketball teams — Shelter Island, Greenport, and Bridgehampton — were battling for playoff spots as of this week.
Bridgehampton’s Killer Bees, whose record was 6-7 as of Tuesday morning, needed to win two of their final three regular-season games to make it. Ditto Greenport, which also was 6-7 as of Tuesday morning. Shelter Island, which was at 7-6 going into its Tuesday afternoon game at home with the Bees, needed to win one of its final three.
The Bees defeated Shelter Island 53-40 in last year’s county Class D final, thus depriving the Hareleggers of their first-ever county title. The first time out this season, the Bees bested Shelter Island 60-41 in the Beehive.
Bridgehampton is to be at home to Greenport, a team it edged 54-50 the first time around, today at 6 p.m. The Bees are to finish up at Knox tomorrow.
