“We couldn’t pass and we couldn’t catch,” Mike Vitulli, who coaches East Hampton High’s boys lacrosse team, said following a 13-8 loss here to Bellport Monday.
It was the fifth straight loss for the Bonackers, whose last win, aside from a forfeit by McGann-Mercy during the spring break, was over Mattituck-Greenport-Southold on April 22.
The good news was that Tyler Menold won most of the face-offs for East Hampton, though the offense would subsequently break down because of the aforementioned poor passing and catching.
“We had fast breaks, we had guys open, but we had way too many turnovers,” said Vitulli. “And that was it.”
East Hampton trailed 5-2 at halftime, though fell even further back in the third quarter as the visitors upped the margin to 10-3.
Jack Scheicher (three), Cort Heneveld, Drew Harvey, and Menold scored for East Hampton in the second half. Harvey and Menold’s scores came with the Bonackers playing a man-down with about five minutes remaining in the game. Matt Smudzinski, a defender, got off the last shot, but it went wide of Bellport’s cage.
The team took a 3-10 record in divisional play into yesterday’s regular-season finale here with 8-5 Elwood-John Glenn.
