A Punt, Pass, and Kick competition for children ages 5 through 14 will be held at East Hampton High School’s turf field Saturday, from noon to 2 p.m.
Don Reese, who heads the youth football and basketball programs here, has said, “We’re hoping to stir up some interest so that we can have a varsity team here again. You can’t play at the varsity level with 20 kids.”
Joe Vas, East Hampton’s athletic director, announced in February that there would be no varsity football in the fall, only a junior varsity. It’s the fourth time in the 90-year history of football here that East Hampton is not fielding a team at the varsity level. There were no varsity games in the war years of 1942 and ’43, nor were there any in 1978, because of “austerity.”
There will be a D.J. at the Punt, Pass, and Kick contest, as well as hamburgers and hot dogs. One needn’t be a member of the East Hampton Youth Football organization to compete, Reese has said.
