East Hampton Opens 'Warming Center'

American Legion Post 419, at 15 Montauk Highway in Amagansett, opened Saturday evening as a "warming center" for those left without heat or electricity by Hurricane Sandy, the Town of East Hampton has announced on its Web site.

The Legion telephone number is 631-267-8728. East Hampton Town Hall can be phoned at 631-324-4140. The East Hampton Town Police nonemergency number is 631-537-7575.

People seeking shelter will be allowed to sleep there, but must bring their own sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, and other supplies, the town said.

No food will be served. There are several nearby choices for take-out meals.

Security will be provided by the East Hampton Town Police Department.

The town also announced that the Suffolk County Water Authority will fill residents' containers with safe drinking water behind the East Hampton Fire House at 1 Cedar Street in East Hampton Village, at the base of the communications tower until further notice.

The fee for dumping brush will be waived at the East Hampton Recycling Center and Montauk Transfer Station through Sunday, according to the town's Web site.
