Legal Aid ‘Legend’ Joins Firm

Seymour W. James Jr. of Sag Harbor, former attorney in chief of the Legal Aid Society of New York City, has become a partner in the criminal defense and civil rights firm of Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, with offices in New York City and on Long Island.

“Seymour James had a long and storied career at the Legal Aid Society of New York City and is a legend in criminal law in New York,” Bruce Barket, Barket Epstein’s founding partner, said in a release. “His contributions to the law and to the countless men, women and families he has helped over his more than 40 years at Legal Aid are unparalleled.”

Mr. James, who graduated from Brown University and the Boston University School of Law, has been with Legal Aid since the 1970s. A former president of the New York State Bar Association, he has held leadership positions in such organizations as the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. Among his recent accolades is a 2018 lifetime achievement award from the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
