To people who love a crusty loaf of bread, the name Eli Zabar was no doubt familiar even before he reopened the Amagansett Farmers Market on Aug. 1. But what probably surprised even them is that the Farmers Market story is less a case of “Manhattan comes to Amagansett” than one of “Eli Zabar and Devon Fredericks come home.”

Killer Tomatoes
When Amy Goldman, a farmer and the author of “The Heirloom Tomato,” is asked where is the best place to grow tomatoes, she points straight down to the ground. “Right here,” she insists. “They are highly adaptable. There are just three important things to remember to successfully grow tomatoes. Full sun, space them widely, and stake or cage them. If you grow plants with the best practices, you are less likely to have pests and diseases.” (Wide spacing means a full five feet apart, allowing seven feet between rows.)
