“I never saw a baked potato on Grandma’s table. It was always scalloped or mashed,” recalls Carolyn Lester Snyder, one of four generations of the Lester family who carry on grandma’s love of cooking at this cheerful roadside market. Yummy muffins, cakes and cookies, and prepared dishes including mashed potatoes, roast chickens, and pulled pork, complement the careful selection of produce, kept in a chilled room, and fish. Many dishes freeze well; jams and some vegetables are put up in jars. The bulk of the fresh food is raised on the family’s own farm or caught by family members. Weekend crowds are frequent and prices, posted on the wall but not on the items, are high, but the lines move steadily and most customers say it’s worth it for the quality.
