Star Party, Trail Walk

New Promised Land Trail
The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will host a Promised Land Trail hike on Saturday at 10 a.m. The group will amble through a truly unique, almost lunar, landscape of pitch pines amid sand dunes along the newly refurbished trail in Napeague State Park. Hikers will discover how the area supposedly got its name (the jury is still out on that one, in the opinion of The Star) and learn about its historical importance as the piney ambience is absorbed on the two-mile excursion.

Hikers have been asked to meet at the intersection of Cranberry Hole Road and Napeague Meadow Road. Eva Moore can be contacted in advance at 631-238-5134, or on the morning of the hike at 631-681-4774, for additional information.

Sky Party at South Fork Natural History Museum
There’s a chance to get a free guided tour of the night sky on Friday, as the South Fork Natural History Museum teams up with astronomers from the Montauk Observatory for Astronomy Night, an evening of stargazing starting at 9. Since it will be held outdoors on the SoFo grounds, the organizers have encouraged attendees to dress warmly and supply their own seating. Warm refreshments will be served.

Advance reservations are required. Also, be advised that weather conditions may affect the event, which will be canceled if the temperature drops below the freezing mark, or if it’s snowing, raining, or cloudy.
