On Wednesday, Montauk was named this summer's most expensive beach destination in the United States.

A survey conducted by CheapHotels.org compared all hotels listed on Kayak -- the travel planning site that aggregates rates for flights, hotels, rental cars, and vacation packages -- to find the minimum price travelers have to spend in the month of August on a double room.

The hotels and inns taken into account must have been rated at least two stars and must be close to the beach.

A stay in Montauk came in as the most expensive in the survey, with an average nightly rate of $312 for the cheapest double room. Nantucket was not far behind, with a rate of $285.

The top 10 most expensive beaches were in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Oregon, California, Maine, and Hawaii.
