Learn journalism skills at one of the country's finest independent newspapers in an interactive workshop series!

Two-week sessions in July and August 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. No journalism experience necessary; application requires a letter of interest from each student. Click to Register

• Reporting lunches with public officials and cultural leaders
• Producing stories for publication
• Introduction to editing
• Writing for the web and social media
• Interviewing techniques
• Small-group sessions with working reporters and photographers
• Site visits to local institutions and industry


Open to students in grades 9 to 12, age 14 and older.

Session I: July 22 to Aug. 2
Session II: Aug. 5 to Aug. 16
Limited to 8 participants per session.

Tuition: $2,575 per session. Students may attend two sessions with prior arrangement. Financial help available.

TEACHING STAFF

Paul GanskyPaul Gansky, Ph.D., lead educator
Paul is Dean of Media Studies at the Ross School in East Hampton, NY, where he leads a broad range of courses canvassing video production, social engineering, e-commerce, and journalism. His courses have been profiled by the Columbia Journalism Review, and his writing has appeared in the Journal of Design History and Design Observer.

 

 

 

David RattrayDavid Rattray, lecturer
David is the fifth member of the Rattray family over three generations to have held the post of editor. His career includes work as a field archaeologist for the American Museum of Natural History. He was associate producer on the public television documentaries "The Hurricane of '38" and "Chicago 1968" for the American Experience and "Tabloid Truth" for Frontline. He worked for Design Division, a museum design firm in Manhattan, before returning to East Hampton in 1998.

 

Taylor Vecsey, lecturer
Taylor is The Star's deputy managing editor and specializes in police and courts reporting. She is also The Star's web editor. Taylor was the founding editor of East Hampton Patch news site and also ran Southampton Patch. Ms. Vecsey is a member of the Bridgehampton Fire Department, where she volunteers as an emergency medical technician.
