The Springs School’s upcoming budget vote was the focus of an April 28 school board meeting, but before talk turned to that, the Journalism Club wanted to talk to the board and the community about how important the club is to them and why it matters so much.

Each member of the club stepped forward to introduce themselves, and after that, the public was told that this club had written over 36 articles so far this year for local newspapers.

Siena Dion said that she enjoys being part of a team. Jacob Ordonez spoke about how the club has helped him socially. He understands the power of interviewing and making connections with people. Adrie Quinn said he plans to explore more in high school and is even considering a career as a journalist. Coral Borsack said that being in the club helped her form connections with kids her age as well as with Danielle Hamilton, the club’s coordinator.

After the presentation, the superintendent, Debra Winter, and the school board gave each student a certificate recognizing their hard work and a journal with an image of an osprey, the school mascot.

The journalists got to meet Christine Sampson, the deputy managing editor at The East Hampton Star, who helps to get their articles published each week. She gave members of the club special reporter’s notebooks.

All in all, club members agreed it was a wonderful experience, and wanted to remind the community to get out and vote on May 21.
