South Fork Poetry: A Christmas Gift

Every year
she gave him a shirt
yellow or worse
and every year
he hated her gift
and never failed
to tell her so.
Now he wishes
he had kissed her
forehead and understood
that a woman doesn’t
always know what to give
her only son
for Christmas.
