Shelter Island Dems Endorse Avlon

Thu, 03/28/2024 - 03:14

The Shelter Island Democratic Committee has endorsed John Avlon’s campaign to represent New York’s First Congressional District. The endorsement is Mr. Avlon’s third from a town Democratic committee, following those from East Hampton and Southampton.

“We need to take back the House majority and flip this seat, and John Avlon is the candidate to do that,” Heather Reylek, chairwoman of the committee, said in a statement issued by Mr. Avlon’s campaign. “John is going to fight for Shelter Island and Suffolk County families and will always put us first. John knows we need to defend a woman’s right to an abortion, take on climate change, and rebuild the middle class. We are proud to endorse John because we know he’s going to take on the issues that matter and will deliver for us in Washington.”

Mr. Avlon said in the same statement that if elected his work would also involve “standing up for democracy at home and abroad.”

“I am looking forward to working with the Shelter Island Democratic Committee to take back this seat and deliver common-sense solutions for Suffolk County.”

Mr. Avlon has also received the endorsement of Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., former Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming, former Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, former State Senator Jim Gaughran, Perry Gershon, the Democrats’ 2018 nominee for the First District, and former United States Senator Doug Jones of Alabama.

Mr. Avlon is likely to face Nancy Goroff in a June 25 primary election. The winner will face Representative Nick LaLota, who is serving his first term in the House of Representatives, in the Nov. 5 general election.
