Stony Brook Southampton Hospital announced Tuesday that it has now earned certification as a Level III trauma center in both adult and pediatric medicine from the American College of Surgeons.

The designation reflects upgraded care capabilities at the hospital, which can handle "prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care, and stabilization of injured patients and emergency operations," a release said. It is the only Level III trauma center on the East End and the only one in Suffolk County to be certified in both adult and pediatric medicine.

The hospital is affiliated with Stony Brook University Hospital, which as a Level I trauma center can handle even more critical health needs. It is about a 12-minute trip by medical helicopter from the South Fork.
