March 24, 1954 - Dec. 12, 2023

David Marshall, who had served as the assistant basketball coach at the Ross School under Kelly McKee in his retirement, died of cancer on Dec. 12 in Southampton. He was 69 and had first been diagnosed about 20 years ago.

Mr. Marshall ran a landscaping company in East Hampton, L&M Landscaping, for 20 years with Matt Laspia.

In his retirement, he became involved in many volunteer activities, including driving for East Hampton Meals on Wheels. He adored his spunky dog, Charlie, his family wrote.

Mr. Marshall was born at Southampton Hospital on March 24, 1954, to the former Mildred McCoy and John M. Marshall, for whom East Hampton’s elementary school is named. He grew up here and was in the top 10 of his graduating class at East Hampton High School, where he was captain of the basketball team.

He went on to Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., where he also played basketball. He graduated in 1976. Five years later, on April 25, 1981, he married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Reutershan, who survives. They were married for 30 years and raised twins, who also survive, Jack Marshall of East Hampton and Danielle Marshall of East Hampton and New York City.

He leaves two siblings who also live here, John Marshall and Nancy Marshall. Another sister, Mary Jo Tocci, died before him.

Services for Mr. Marshall will be held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton next Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. A graveside service will take place at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery here on Friday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m.

His family has suggested donations to East Hampton Meals on Wheels, 33 Newtown Lane, East Hampton 11937.

Rowdy Hall (the House) Is on a Roll

Long before the name “Rowdy Hall” was adopted by a popular East Hampton Village bar and eatery (now in Amagansett), it was a boarding house: Mrs. Harry Hamlin’s Rowdy Hall. The building, now a single-family house, still stands at 111 Egypt Lane, although currently it’s floating, suspended six feet above a hole. When it’s lowered again, it will be on a new foundation.
