Loose Pipe Strikes Motorist

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:38

Around noon on Aug. 2 there was a two-car accident in Amagansett, near Town Lane. Angel Godinez Rosendo, 35, of Southampton, southbound on Abraham’s Path in a Warren’s Nursery Ford pickup, told police a 10-foot sewage pipe had fallen off the truck. The pipe struck a 2010 Chevrolet owned by Diego Reyes-Maya of East Hampton, but operated by Desireth Esparza Tovar, 35, also of East Hampton.

Ms. Esparza Tovar, who was heading north on Abraham’s Path when the pipe struck her windshield, complained of lower arm pain and had minor bleeding, but declined a trip to the hospital. Mr. Godinez Rosendo was given a ticket for transporting loose cargo.

Nickolay Braunreuther of South Orange, N.J., 26, fell asleep at the wheel of a 2014 Kia at around 10 p.m. on July 31, he told police, and ran into a hedgerow at the unlit intersection of Fenwick Place and Fenwick Drive in Montauk. Neither the driver nor his two passengers, Michael Haberman, 73, and Trudi Haberman, 64, was injured. Mr. Braunreuther was not charged.

Another sleeping driver was Kristofer A. Bennett, 24, of East Hampton, who dozed off shortly before midnight on Aug. 1 while operating a 2013 Ford sedan owned by John A. Bennett. Mr. Bennett swerved off Old Stone Highway in Springs, hitting two stop signs and a tree at the Accabonac Road intersection. He was not hurt, nor was he charged.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
