East Hampton

A Montauk man called police on Jan. 15 after taking his car to the Citgo service center on North Main Street. The man, known locally as McKenzie, said a mechanic had become physically confrontational while talking with him, and had followed him outside the repair area acting aggressively.

Matias Koch, a manager for Whitmore’s Landscaping, reported on Sunday that wood piled on the company’s Spring Close Highway property has been disappearing over the past couple of months.

East Hampton Village

An employee of a divorced couple who own 50 Middle Lane called police Friday afternoon after discovering that a bidet off the master bedroom was overflowing, causing damage to the ceiling and floors below. Police found no sign of forced entry, and contacted both owners, whose names were removed from the report along with other details. The man said he was the last person at the house and would return the next morning to see if anything was missing. Police asked the woman about a cat they had seen in the house; she said it lived there and was left alone.

Police went to Main Beach around noon Sunday after a surfer was reported lost in the fog, west of the first jetty, but other surfers said he had gotten out of the water safely. The man who made the report told police he thought the surfer “was out too far, and feared for his safety due to the thick fog.”

Town police contacted village police shortly after midnight Jan. 16 to pass on a report of a suspicious character standing at the corner of Montauk Highway and Stephen Hand’s Path, which is in village jurisdiction. The man standing there told an officer that he was waiting for a taxi, and was in no distress. He gave his name as Count Williams, but declined to provide further information, as “he had done nothing wrong.” Police agreed and went on their way.

Montauk

Rosemary Scollan of Monroe Drive discovered on Jan. 15 that her house had been listed on the Airbnb website and that several people had already reserved rental time there. She said she was afraid they would show up and blame her for the scam, adding that she had contacted Airbnb, which has removed the listing and is investigating several others listed by the same person.

A West Lake Drive resident reported on Sunday that her premises had been burglarized while she was away for a few days. Macarena Ramos said an envelope containing $1,200 in cash was missing, along with a MacBook Pro, also valued at $1,200. Police found a black do-rag and a black watch cap, apparently left behind by the thief.

Northwest Woods

A Milina Drive man complained of identity theft on Jan. 17. Rafael Santos told police he had not received any mail for several weeks, including bank statements and legal documents. Not only that, he said, but his signature had been forged on a check for $550 and numerous unauthorized charges had been made against his credit cards, starting in mid-December. Police continue to investigate this case.

Sag Harbor

Police were called to the D J Hart store on Main Street last week, where an irate man was frightening staff members. He was returning something, but was angry about being offered a store credit rather than a refund. The dispute was amicably worked out, police reported.

Springs

A Lotus Avenue homeowner who had been away for a few weeks returned to find that the house had been burglarized. Linda Carbone told police early Sunday morning that three large-screen TVs, some electronic devices, and several other items were missing. The case has been turned over to the detective division.

Long Days on the Fire Line In Orange County

East Hampton and Amagansett firefighters volunteered to head north last week to help fight a 5,000-acre wildfire in Orange County, N.Y., not once but twice, battling unfamiliar terrain to do so. “They fight fires completely differently than we do when we have a brush fire,” the Amagansett chief said.

“It could have gone worse. We’re lucky that I have officers here that weren’t shot,” said Police Chief Jeff Erickson at Friday’s East Hampton Village Board meeting.
