Following a morning raid of a house in East Hampton on Friday, police arrested a man on multiple weapons charges.
A townwide emergency service unit assisted the East Hampton Town police's detective division to conduct a search at 21 Wireless Road, a residential street just outside the East Hampton Village core, at about 7:50 a.m.
Police said that an extensive search produced 17 firearms from the residence: six assault weapons; one loaded 25-caliber handgun, five shotguns, and five rifles.
Christopher R. Fausett, 57, a resident of the house, was charged with six felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, two misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a count of felony weapons possession in in the second degree, and one count of criminal possession of a firearm, a felony.
Because some of the weapons described in a police statement released on Friday were legal to possess under certain conditions, it was not immediately clear what lead to the arrest. Police provided no further details.
A video from around 8 a.m. Friday showed members of the emergency services unit, similar to a S.W.A.T. team, handcuffing Mr. Fausett on the side of the road at Dayton and Toilsome Lanes, near of the open driver's side door of a white Jeep. A large, black armored police vehicle can be seen in the background.
The police vehicle, a Lenco BearCat, or Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck, was designed for military and law enforcement applications. It was purchased in 2019 with a $307,700 gift to the town from an anonymous donor.
Police said Mr. Fausett would be held overnight and arraigned Saturday morning at East Hampton Town Justice Court.
