East Hampton Man Arrested on Weapons Charges

Following a morning raid of a house in East Hampton on Friday, police arrested a man on multiple weapons charges. 

A townwide emergency service unit assisted the East Hampton Town police's detective division to conduct a search at 21 Wireless Road, a residential street just outside the East Hampton Village core, at about 7:50 a.m.

Police said that an extensive search produced 17 firearms from the residence: six assault weapons; one loaded 25-caliber handgun, five shotguns, and five rifles.

Christopher R. Fausett, 57, a resident of the house, was charged with six felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, two misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a count of felony weapons possession in in the second degree, and one count of criminal possession of a firearm, a felony.

Because some of the weapons described in a police statement released on Friday were legal to possess under certain conditions, it was not immediately clear what lead to the arrest. Police provided no further details. 

A video from around 8 a.m. Friday showed members of the emergency services unit, similar to a S.W.A.T. team, handcuffing Mr. Fausett on the side of the road at Dayton and Toilsome Lanes, near of the open driver's side door of a white Jeep. A large, black armored police vehicle can be seen in the background.

The police vehicle, a Lenco BearCat, or Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck, was designed for military and law enforcement applications. It was purchased in 2019 with a $307,700 gift to the town from an anonymous donor.

Police said Mr. Fausett would be held overnight and arraigned Saturday morning at East Hampton Town Justice Court.

No crime was committed on Aug. 12 on Front Street in Springs, where police responded to a report that a man was holding a shotgun. Police said it was in fact a BB gun, which the man told them he uses to scare off squirrels and other small animals.
