Amagansett

A man was riding a bike on Bluff Road on June 27 when he was sideswiped by a green Toyota Highlander that fled the scene. Police have not said whether the car was found.

A red-and-black lawn mower said to have cost $15,000 was reported stolen from outside Love Adorned, in Amagansett Square, on the morning of Aug. 20. The mower left tire tracks in the grass leading toward the exit.

That afternoon, an East Hampton woman reported that a former bandmate had threatened her group with legal action when the band let her go, and she wanted to file a charge of harassment. Police told her the threats did not violate criminal law but could be addressed in civil court.

Two men were ticketed simultaneously for public urination on Main Street early on Saturday morning.

East Hampton Village

A man in “a small Honda” was reported to be “watching employees enter the Dime Bank” on Aug. 21. The manager asked that the report be put on record.

The next morning, employees at the same bank, which is on Gingerbread Lane, spotted the stranger waiting in the parking lot before the bank opened. No one recognized him as a bank customer. Police searched the area but did not find him.

That afternoon, a man playing soccer with his son in Herrick Park reported seeing a “small plastic baggie containing a white substance.” Police found the baggie, but there was nothing in it.

Montauk

On Aug. 14, a woman approached a group of youths at Navy Beach who were waiting their turn to go tubing on a friend’s boat. She later told police she thought they were “smoking and allowing their dog to walk on the beach grass,” both of which they denied, telling her to “mind her own business.” Officers arrived and advised all concerned to go their separate ways.

A drunken guest at Montauk Manor slapped a security guard who was trying to escort him back to his room late on the night of Aug. 16. Police told the guest and his friend to stay in their room for the night.

On Aug. 20, the owner of Navy Beach noticed the door of the storage room had been kicked open and reported a burglary. The door jamb was broken, but police reported that nothing seemed to be missing.

That night an Otis Road man who was playing PlayStation online with a friend reported that they began to argue after he cut off communication. He wanted the friend charged with harassment, but police advised rather that he avoid the friend going forward.

Sag Harbor

Two brothers were involved in a verbal altercation at a house on Harrison Street on the afternoon of Aug. 20. One of them, according to the report, was “slamming items in the house,” and their mother told police that several bottles of alcohol were missing. After the argument, the agitated brother fled to Havens Beach, where police later found and calmed him.

The next night a caller reported two “suspicious” men who were “walking around cars near Sag Pizza.” An officer found the pair, who said they’d been shopping nearby. The incident report was closed.

Springs

A Malone Street resident called police on Aug. 19 to say that her neighbor had threatened to kill her dogs if they kept barking. The neighbor told police that “he cannot even open his windows” due to the noise. Police advised the neighbors to remain civil.

A Shadow Lane man called his bank after receiving a series of suspicious phone calls from Belgium and finding that two checks belonging to his business had been issued for $124,755. On the afternoon of Aug. 21, he reported identity theft to police.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
