Albert Edward Bevan of Shelter Island, a former guidance counselor at East Hampton High School, died of complications from pneumonia on Oct. 13 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 89.

Born on March 24, 1930, in Scranton, Pa., to John Bevan and the former Martha McGuire, he graduated from Scranton Technical High School. After graduating, he served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force, stationed in Germany and at Mitchell Air Force Base in Uniondale.

Upon his discharge, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University, and a master’s in education from Hofstra.

Mr. Bevan’s teaching career began at Hicksville High School, where he taught English, speech, and drama. After moving to East Hampton, he spent 16 years as a guidance counselor at the high school. He also directed and choreographed several of the school’s musical productions. 

He was married for 62 years to the former Florence (Tippi) Weber of Shelter Island, who survives. With his wife, he managed the Shelter Island food pantry and worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. A community organization named them volunteers of the year in 2008, 2016, and 2017. They also received the Lions Club citizenship award in 2017, and in 2018, the Diocese of Rockville Center awarded them a St. Agnes Medal of Service.

Mr. Bevan was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church here, and later of Our Lady of the Isle of Shelter Island, where he served as a eucharistic minister, lecturer, and choir member.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Carole Fitts of Montgomery, N.Y., Paul Bevan of West Islip, Scott Bevan of New York City, Gloria Corona of North Bellmore, and Mark Bevan of Cary, N.C. A brother, Gerard Bevan, 14 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild also survive.

The family received visitors at the Shelter Island Funeral Home on Oct. 18 and a funeral Mass, celebrated by the Rev. Peter DeSanctis, was on Oct. 19 at Our Lady of the Isle. Burial followed at the Shelter Island Cemetery.
